Star Wars Costuming for Dummies: The 5 Basics

Star Wars costumes and cosplay play a big roll in Star Wars fandom. Whether you're dressing up for a Comic-Con, Halloween, or you just want to wear Stormtrooper armor as your skin, Star Wars costumes and cosplay are fun for everyone! Here's my list of 5 basic things you need to know before you start making or you buy a costume!

1. START EARLY

When making a Star Wars costume, start to work on it ASAP! This will give you enough time just in case you make a mistake! Buy up all the materials you need, then work as fast as a Battle Droid who spots a Jedi with his lightsaber for the first time! Also, find out the dates of the event that you are going to! That will help you determine how much time you have! When buying a Star Wars costume, it's a well-known trick to buy your costume and costume accessories early, so they will go down in price! Try to buy it no later than the month of August!

2. FIND DEALS

When making a Star Wars costume, make sure when you look for materials to make your costume, you can use a Jedi Mind Trick on one of the employees at the store, so you can see if there will be a sale happening on the next day or two. When buying a Star Wars costume, make sure you also ask around for deals.

3. DO RESEARCH ON YOUR CHARACTER

When making a Star Wars costume, make sure you try to get as close as you can to every detail -- make the costume look as authentic as possible. It might impress the judges at a contest, or people might actually think that you are the ACTUAL character that you are trying to be. When buying a Star Wars costume (and this goes for both making and buying a costume), try to watch your character's movements, such as the way he or she walks, talks, and holds a weapon -- if your character holds one. Really get to know your character!

4. FIND INSPIRATION FOR HAIR AND MAKEUP

With either buying or making a Star Wars costume, find pictures of the character who you are dressing up as, watch them in a Star Wars movie or TV episode (it gives you an excuse to watch Star Wars stuff all day!), or look up tutorials on the internet or YouTube on how to REALLY look like your character!

5. TAKE PHOTOS AND DOCUMENT

With both making and buying Star Wars costumes, take photos of you in your costume and document how you made the costume, or where you bought it! Both will help you in the future if you make or buy another Star Wars costume again!
