"The Force Awakens" Insight -- Why did Kylo Ren Remove His Helmet?
Rey is Interrogated by Kylo Ren
(Article from a Guest Writer)
In the movie "The Force Awakens", it was surprising that a villain who went to the trouble of developing an intimidating helmet, would remove his mask, especially at the moment he wants to be his most intimidating. It makes us think: what was the character thinking at that time? Why did Kylo Ren remove his helmet?
The scene is set: Kylo Ren has the scavenger Rey strapped and immobile, and is ready to interrogate her and use the dark side of The Force to take the information from her brain and memory -- his gloved hand over the side of her forehead and temple. But wait! This painted scene needs to have one more image. Kylo Ren is NOT wearing his intimidating helmet and his face is revealed.
Rey had called him a "creature in a mask", and for some reason, Kylo Ren decided to remove his helmet, which also resulted in him losing his equally intimating scary voice changer. Why?
Some say that Kylo Ren's helmet was modeled similarly to that of Darth Vader, his grandfather, whom he seems to idolize. If this is true, why would Kylo Ren not to want to mimic Darth Vader?
When Kylo Ren interrogated Poe Dameron, the Resistance Pilot, his helmet was on. Why would interrogating Rey be different? Dramatic emphasis? Maybe the audience being prepared for the removal of his helmet toward the end of the film with Kylo Ren's mind-blowing scene with Han Solo.
Perhaps Kylo Ren needs to show a bit of "humanity" in this scene. But there has to be more. Perhaps there is a deeper connection between Rey and Kylo Ren -- a history known to him, but not to her. He may know more about "the girl" than the film is letting on. Until the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi film is released, fans can continue to wonder about the Rey interrogation.
In the meantime, it leads one to think more about Kylo Ren's connection with Darth Vader. As we all know, Darth Vader HAD to keep HIS helmet on -- his helmet was life-sustaining and helped to keep him alive. However, if that we not the case, one question remains:
If Darth Vader COULD HAVE taken off his helmet in a an interrogation scene like the one with Rey, would he do it?
Would Darth Vader take his helmet off?
